24 actor to play character at age 49 for upcoming PS3/Xbox 360 game

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima announced at video game developer Konami's Pre-E3 show on Thursday that actor Kiefer Sutherland (24, Phone Booth) will play the role of Snake in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V video game. The announcement starts 10 minutes into the below video.

Kojima said that he needed an actor who could "portray both the facial and vocal qualities of a man in his late 40s," as the game takes place in 1984 when Snake (Big Boss) is 49 years old. Kojima said he wanted Snake to have a more subdued performance, which is why he chose Sutherland as the actor.

Kojima said he asked Avi Arad (Spider-Man films) for advice, and Arad introduced him to Sutherland. Arad is producing a live-action Hollywood film adaptation of the Metal Gear Solid franchise.

Sutherland himself said that he is honored to play the role and found a personal quality to the character that he felt connected to.

Voice actor and writer David Hayter had confirmed in March that he was not approached to reprise his Snake role.

Metal Gear Solid V is a combination of two games: The Phantom Pain, and Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes. The game features Snake after he wakes up from a nine-year coma. Snake has lost a lot of his abilities, and must crawl through a hospital to escape. After Snake escapes from the hospital in the game, he can then walk around the game's world openly. The game will use Kojima Productions' new Fox Engine. Kojima will again produce and direct the title.

Konami will release Metal Gear Solid V on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
