Say Hello to Black Jack's Sato Divorces

Fellow manga creators split after 12 years of marriage

Manga creator Shuho Sato and his ex-wife and fellow manga creator Tomomi Satō announced their divorce over Twitter on Tuesday. In an interview with both Tomomi and Shuho on the "Blomag" e-mail magazine and blog service, Tomomi revealed that the decision to divorce came in February after her ex-husband confessed to her that he had impregnated another woman. Tomomi will have custody of their son and Shuho will pay alimony and child support. The two had been married for 12 years. Tomomi added in the interview, "Even though we're no longer married, it doesn't change the fact that we are our son's parents, so I would like our relationship as good work partners to continue, and I would also like to have a favorable relationship as parents."

Shuho Sato is the author of the Say Hello to Black Jack, Umizaru, and The Isle of TOKKOU manga series. Tomomi Satō is the author of the series Musho Kusushi, which is about a doctor at a women's prison.

Sato announced in April 2012 that he would make all derivative usage of Say Hello to Black Jack, both commercial and non-commercial, free of restrictions for anyone as of September 15, 2012. Amazon's Kindle e-book store began offering the manga in English under the title Give My Regards to Black Jack last September, but only Japanese editions are now available on the retail website.

Sato has been offering his manga and other creators' titles, including his ex-wife's, on MangaonWeb since April 2010. He asked for volunteer English translators later that year. Sato announced his plans to allow derivative use of Give My Regards to Black Jack after revealing that he cancelled his publishing contract with Kodansha for the manga.
