Miss USA Rocked an Optimus Prime Outfit at the Miss Universe National Costume Show

posted on by Bamboo Dong
Miss USA said the costume was meant to "[embrace] powerful women in a transforming country."

Every year, the contestants for the Miss Universe pageant are asked to compete in the Miss Universe National Costume contest. And every year, the results range from glamorous, to strange, to outright silly. This year, Miss USA's outfit was a fun shout-out to an iconic superhero.

Miss USA representative Erin Brady competed in this patriotic Optimus Prime-inspired costume, designed by Victoria's Secret costume designer Martin Izquierdo.

Critics weren't so nice about it, though, with comments ranging from "very unglamorous" to "fashioned from some leftover washing-up liquid bottles, yogurt pots, cardboard boxes, and a lot of glitter," but they can't deny that the costume is unique.

Said Brady on Instagram, "Nothing screams national costume like the first Miss USA transformer. Embracing powerful women in a transforming country that's made up of so much. That's what Miss USA means to me. #missuniverse #power #strong #women"

By the way, this isn't the first time a Victoria's Secret costume designer has sampled from pop culture. At the 2012 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, one of the models wore an outfit that looked a lot like Rei Ayanami's plugsuit from Neon Genesis Evangelion. A representative from Gainax later said they were perplexed by the situation.
