The disk's release celebrates the second performance of the "Sound Theatre x Natsume Yūjin-Chō ~Tsudoi Ongeki no Shō~" (Sound Theatre x Natsume's Book of Friends: A Sound Theatre Gathering) stage production, which will be performed in the Maihama Ampitheater on December 5. The original performance was held in September 2013.

Yuki Midorikawa's Natsume's Book of Friends (Natsume Yūjin-Chō) manga revolves around Natsume, a boy who has been able to see yōkai since he was little. Unfortunately, humans shun him, and there is not much fondness between him and yōkai either. One day, he inherits a Yūjin-Chō ("Book of Friends") from his grandmother. The book is actually full of contracts that his grandmother made to trap yōkai. As one yōkai after another shows up, Natsume tries to release or help them — even while many of them seek vengeance on him.

Midorikawa launched the manga in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume Comics magazine in 2003. Hakusensha published the manga's 19th compiled book volume on May 1. Viz Media published the manga's 18th English volume on June 2. The manga has been adapted into four TV anime seasons from 2008 to 2012. Crunchyroll streamed all four seasons of the anime outside Japan. NIS America released all four seasons on home video.
