Mary and The Witch's Flower Director Designs Airport's Stained Glass

Mary and The Witch's Flower director Hiromasa Yonebayashi (seen right in image below), who also directed When Marnie Was There and The Secret World of Arrietty at Studio Ghibli, provided the original design for Komatsu Airport's new stained glass display. An unveiling ceremony for the display was held at the airport in Komatsu, Ishikawa on March 22.
The city of Komatsu is the setting of the Kanjinchō kabuki play and home to Ataka no Seki (Ataka Barrier). Children perform Kanjinchō in the city every May. Komatsu Airport's new stained glass art depicts children performing the drama with serious expressions and a girl waving to her mother in front of the performance. The stained glass is about three meters (about 10 feet) tall by seven meters (about 23 feet) wide, and it is on display in the airport's second-floor departure lobby.
Yonebayashi is from Nonoichi, Ishikawa. He appeared at the stained glass display's unveiling ceremony and praised the finished work. He also said, "I want the many people who use the airport to know local culture through the work."
Yonebayashi's Mary and The Witch's Flower anime film opened in Japan in July 2017, and it has since screened in various countries and territories around the world. The film opened in the United States on January 18, and it had earned US$1.9 million at the box office as of February 9 to become GKIDS' most successful theatrical release yet.
