Giant Akira Mural Calendar Sold for 1 Day Only
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Pedestrians in the Shibuya district of Tokyo probably noticed changes around the PARCO department store. The store is under renovations until 2019 and its construction barricades have featured a number of artistic face-lifts from Katsuhiro Ōtomo's classic manga Akira. Manga art first appeared in winter 2017 and grew into massive gallery of sorts as we approach 2019--the setting of the anime film itself.
The artwork is coming off the walls and onto the page to create an extremely limited and large 2019 calendar. The Tokyo GALLERY X BY PARCO will sell the over-sized calendar for a single day: October 8. Supplies are limited to just 2,109 B0-size calendars.
These extra-large pieces of art also have an extra-large price tag, at least as far as calendars go. Each will retail for 13,000 yen (US$114) and comes with a bonus can badge. If you won't be in Japan on October 8, you may be in luck. Brooklyn's Hypefest on October 6-7 will have some of the calendars for purchase. Buyers in Brooklyn will get an additional sticker to take home with them.
Akira has left a lasting impression on pop-culture across the world. References have appeared in music videos, Hollywood films, and the anime is forever immortalized in space.
