Weekly Shonen Champion Reveals Baki, BEASTARS Creators Are Father-Daughter

BEASTARS creator Paru Itagaki has never shown her face publicly, instead opting for a chicken mask when she appears at events. There is one thing we do know about the elusive artist; she's the daughter of Baki manga creator Keisuke Itagaki. Their familial relationship was revealed in this year's 42nd issue of Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine. The magazine includes an interview with both manga creators titled "Parent and Daughter Meet Face-to-Face in a Magazine!!"
Prior to the magazine's release on September 19, the Itagakis' relationship was not publicly known. Both creators' manga are serialized in Weekly Shōnen Champion. The interview includes the origin of the elder Itagaki's Grappler Baki series and the advice he gave his daughter when she decided to become a manga artist. The interview also reveals why their relationship was kept a secret until now. The interview also includes comments from their mutual editor, Takashi Sawa.
Paru Itagaki will start an autobiographical manga Paruno Graffiti (a play on her name and the band Porno Graffiti) in the October issue of Kodansha's Kiss magazine on September 25. The "short home drama" will center on Itagaki and her two older sisters, mother, and father. The promotional artwork shows father Keisuke Itagaki in a form resembling The Fantastic Four's The Thing.
The BEASTARS manga is inspiring a television anime adaptation by CG anime studio Orangethat will premiere on Fuji TV's [+Ultra] programming block in October, and will stream exclusively on Netflix. Keisuke Itagaki's Baki manga first anime season debuted exclusively on Netflix in June 2018 in Japan. A second season is in the works.
