Why Tokyopop has decided to cancel Smile

Kristien Brada explains Tokyopop's decision to cancel Smile Magazine as an attempt to free up more resources for other work, particularly on the "Authentic Manga" line of products. "We were really blown away, in a good way, by the response to the Authentic Manga line," explains Brada, "We want to be able to put just as much time into each book (Authentic Manga)."

While Ms. Brada didn't mention any specific new licenses, her comments suggest that Tokyopop has licensed a larger number of Manga titles for release under their Authentic Manga line, explaining the need for more resources just to put "as much time into each book."

When asked if Smile Magazine wasn't financially viable any more she responded that wasn't the case, and that it was a tough decision to cancel the anthology. She also stressed that every title in Smile Magazine is, or will soon be, available in graphic novel form.
