2002 marked a rapid increase in the amount of anime/manga related conventions and festivals being held outside of Japan. Here's a breakdown of the number of events by continents.

North America Conventions/Festivals 44
South America Conventions/Festivals 6
Europe Conventions/Festivals 12
Australia Conventions/Festivals 5

This shows a continued growth of conventions from 2001. Here's the list of events for the previous year.

North America Conventions/Festivals 38
South America Conventions/Festivals 1
Europe Conventions/Festivals 4
Australia Conventions/Festivals 1

Patrick Delahanty, the Vice Chairman of Anime Boston, has created a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet of Anime Event Statistics tracking the growth of Anime events in North America back to the early 1990s. The spreadsheet shows an overall attendance as well as an average per con attendance growth of 37% in 2002 versus 2001. The largest anime events that Patrick has been able to gather figures on for 2002 is from Anime Expo and Otakon. Both events had a combined attendence of over 27,000. To put this in perspective, that's about the size of some major U.S. Colleges such as Colorado State University or Boston University.
