Japan Extends Copyrights

posted on by Christopher Macdonald
In a move similar to the recent extension of copyrights in the United States, the term for copyrights in Japan has been extended from 50 to 70 years. It has been roughly 50 years since the release of Mizoguchi's Ugetsu Monogatari, Ozu's Tokyo Monogatari, Kurosawa's Shichinin no Samurai and other Japanese classics, had the term not been extended, these films would have soon entered the public domain. The Japanese Diet accepted arguements from TOHO and other companies and agreed to the extension.
