Naruto Manga Sales Jump with TV Broadcast

Volume 2 Outsells Volume 7 in Most Recent Bookscan Rankings.

ICv2 reports that Naruto dominated Bookscan's Graphic Novel chart for the week ending September 18th.

Naruto premiered on Cartoon Network on September 10th, and during the first full week following the North American TV broadcast premiere, sales of the Naruto graphic novels soared.

All seven of the already released Naruto graphic novels made it into the chart's top 20, with four of them in the top 10. Volume two ranked second on the chart, selling more copies than the most recently released volume.

ICv2 cites the fact that volume 2 sold more copies that week than volume 7 as evidence that "exposure on the Cartoon Network created new fans for the series." While sales of any given title typically taper off as the series continues, it is very rare for older volumes to outsell newer volumes on a weekly basis. This typically only happens when some outside factor is driving new sales.

Despite the improved sales, none of the volumes made it into USA Today's top 150 books list, nor did Tokyopop's D.N.Angel Vol. 9, the top selling manga for that week (D.N.Angel volume 7 made it into the list in April).

Naruto volumes 3, 4, 6 and 7 did however make it into the USA Today list when they were released, with volume 4 reaching the 102nd spot. Volume 8 is due out in December.
