Monthly Shonen Jump To Cease Publication

posted on 2007-02-25 10:52 AEDT
Sister publication to Weekly Shonen Jump is retired due to low sales, strong competition

Major Japanese publishing house Shueisha has announced that their magazine "Monthly Shonen Jump" will cease publication after the July issue hits newsstands on June 6th. Although the publication shares a name with one of Japan's largest manga magazines, "Weekly Shonen Jump" (which serializes Naruto, One Piece, Bleach and other major titles), Shueisha claims that the sales numbers of "Monthly" have caused problems for the publication.

According to Jiji Tsuushinsha, the magazine is being retired due to sales numbers that are 1/3rd of what they were when the magazine was more popular. Shueisha will start another magazine around the time that "Monthly" ceases publication, but no announcements have been made concerning whether or not some of the titles in "Monthly" will move to the new magazine.

According to the Japan Magazine Publishing Association (JMPA), "Monthly Shonen Jump" has been selling about 380,000 copies of the magazine each month. By comparison, rival publication "Monthly Shonen Magazine" sells about 990,000 copies a month.
