Afro Samurai to Air on Japanese TV in May

posted on by Christopher Macdonald
Japanese Version to include material not previously aired on Spike TV

According to the press release, Afro Samurai, which has never been broadcast in Japan, will have it's Japanese TV premiere on Thursday May 3rd, 2007.

The Japan broadcast will feature a "complete Director's Cut version," including footage that was not part of the Spike TV broadcast. The series will be aired in English with Japanese subtitles.

Afro Samurai's worldwide premiere was on Spike TV's website when they streamed episode 1 for free. Episode 1 was subsequently broadcast on Spike TV, where the remaining 4 episodes premiered. The English DVD will be released by Funimation on May 22. Funimation will release Afro Samurai in edited format and uncut format. We do not have confirmation at this time whether or not Funimation's uncut release and the Japanese broadcast version are identical.

Update: We've confirmed that the Japanese broadcast will have the same running time as Funimation's uncut release, and it will not contain anymore material than Funimation's uncut release (which we are told is "absolutely uncut"), however the status of any edits to the Japanese broadcast remains unconfirmed.
