Suspect allegedly sold 106 copies for 48,000 yen

Police in the Yamagata Prefecture of northeastern Japan arrested a 24-year-old man for infringing on copyrights by copying and selling anime movies without authorization.

The man, who came from an agricultural region of Saga Prefecture on the other end of the country, allegedly pirated DVDs of Toei Animation's Dragonball movies from September to Novembr of 2006. The police say that he then sold 106 of the copies to two men in the Shiga and Hyogo Prefectures in central Japan for 48,000 yen (about US$390) via a mobile phone forum.

The four Dragonball movies (along with the 13 Dragon Ball Z movies) have been only available on Japanese DVD in a 2006 limited-edition box set that costs 50,000 yen (US$400).
