Japanese Embassy in the UK Promotes Manga

posted on by Mikhail Koulikov
Exhibition, manga-writing contest, seminar highlight Japanese popular culture.

In recognition of the growing popularity of Japanese popular culture in Great Britain, the Japanese Embassy to the United Kingdom has announced a summer-long series of events aimed at promoting manga to British audiences. The first component of this program will be an exhibition of English-language manga translations, to be held at the embassy from June 11 to June 29, and an academic seminar on manga. The date of the seminar has not yet been announced.

Starting on June 12, the Embassy will also hold a manga-writing competition. Legal residents of the UK who will be sixteen years old or older by January 1, 2008 are invited to submit original manga stories (between four and six A4-sized pages in length) that in some way make reference to Japan. The submission deadline is September 14. The winner of the "Manga Jiman" contest will receive two round-trip air tickets to Japan. Runner-up prises include a Toshiba laptop computer and a Canon EOS SLR digital camera. Winning entries will also be exhibited at the Embassy.

Further details and the specific rules for the contest are available at the Embassy website.
