Japan Arts Fund earmarks billions of yen for anime and film projects
With the intent of promoting Japan's film businesses and film arts, the Japan Arts Fund has announced the second financial aid application period for films, documentaries, and feature-length anime. Applications will be accepted between July 13 and July 20.
The fund is supported with government capital totaling 54.1 billion yen (about US$440 million) and private donations worth 11.2 billion yen (US$91 million). The funds are distributed each year through an application process.
This time, the projects eligible for funding include theatrical films, documentaries, and feature-length anime films. The amount of money granted to each project varies depending on the nature of the project itself. For feature-length films and documentaries, funding is distributed based on the degree of need each project has. For anime films, funding is distributed on the basis of whether the anime is shorter or longer than one hour. Anime shorter than one hour in length are eligible to receive 3 to 10 million yen ($25,000 to $81,000 USD) while projects longer than one hour are eligible for 20 to 80 million yen ($163,000 to $650,000 USD).
There are very few restrictions on the content of the anime. However, the fund has asked that all anime applying for funds be animated in a "frame-by-frame" animation style. Television anime are not eligible for funding. As with most projects that the fund supports, the anime may not contain promotions for commercial products, a specific religion, or a political cause.
