Famed actor to promote anime, game, film, manga events

The Japan International Contents Festival, also known as CoFesta, has appointed famed actor Kōji Yakusho as the "main character" of the festival. As a spokesperson for the festival, Yakusho will help with the promotion of Japanese entertainment properties and promotion of the various events that are part of CoFesta.

CoFesta, which actually consists of 18 seperate events scattered across the Tokyo area, focuses on the promotion of entertainment properties, including anime, video games, music, films, and other pop culture-related industries, which is referred to as "content" or "contents" in Japanese. The festival officially begins on September 19 with a ceremony, followed by the opening of the Tokyo Game Show on September 20. The festival ends with the conclusion of the Tokyo International Film Festival on October 28. Event sponsors include Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and a number of industry promotion groups and companies.

Yakusho, who is well known among international audiences for his roles in The Eel, Shall We Dance?, Babel, and other films, was recognized in a press conference for CoFesta on Tuesday. The actor said that he looks forward to helping promote Japan's "charm and talent" to international audiences. "I love Japanese anime as well," said the actor, adding with a grin, "Videogames, however…"

Other events that are part of CoFesta include an anime promotion conference in Akihabara and the pop culture business convention Tiffcom.
