Manga-Inspired Films Screen in Los Angeles in November

Funuke with artist heroine, Sakuran based on Moyoco Anno manga

The American Film Institute will screen two manga-inspired live-action films as part of the 2007 AFI Fest that runs in Los Angeles, California through November. Daihachi Yoshida's tragicomedy film Funuke, Show Some Love You Losers! centers around an aspiring horror manga artist after her parents die and her eccentric siblings comes together for the funeral. The film features several stylized animated sequences which recreate the artist's horror manga. It screens at the ArcLight Theatre on November 5 and 7 as part of AFI Fest's International Feature Competition.

Mika Ninagawa made her 2007 directorial debut with her acclaimed adaptation of the Sakuran manga by Moyoco Anno (Happy Mania, Hataraki Man, Sugar Sugar Rune). The film stars pop singer Anna Tsuchiya (Kamikaze Girls' Ichigo, singing voice for NANA television series' Nana Osaki) in a free-spirited recreation of a courtesan's life in an Edo-era Tokyo brothel. It screens at the ArcLight Theatre on November 8 and 10 as part of AFI Fest's Dark Horizons program.
