Sakuran Director to Print Photo Book of Death Note's L

Mika Ninagawa holds photo shoot of Ken'ichi Matsuyama reenacting L

Mika Ninagawa, the acclaimed photographer and budding film director (Sakuran), is producing a photo collection book of actor Ken'ichi Matsuyama reenacting his detective role of L from the Death Note suspense film franchise. The fictional premise of the book is that L reluctantly agreed to be photographed in his daily routine after Ninagawa made a special request through L's assistant Watari. The photo shoot took place in western Tokyo's Shibuya Center Gai shopping district, eastern Tokyo's Hanayashiki Amusement Park, and other locales from August until September.

Matsuyama will star in L change the WorLd, the Death Note spinoff film that opens February 9. The first two Death Note films were themselves based on the manga of the same name. Ninagawa, a "big L fan" in real life, earned positive reviews for her live-action adaptation of Moyoco Anno's Sakuran manga about a courtesan's life in historical Tokyo.
