Funimation Adds Ghost Hunt Anime by 12 Kingdoms Author

posted on by Egan Loo
Supernatural mysteries blend Asian folklore with European mythology

The North American anime distributor Funimation Entertainment marks Halloween this year by announcing its acquisition of the Ghost Hunt supernatural mystery anime series. The anime is based on the shōjo manga of the same name by artist Shiho Inada and Fuyumi Ono, the award-winning author of The Twelve Kingdoms and Shiki. The manga, which initially ran in Nakayoshi magazine, was in turn based on Ono's Akuryō novel series.

In the story, high school girl Mai Taniyama encounters Shibuya Psychic Research, a paranormal investigation agency led by a tall, dark, handsome — and, naturally, aloof — teenager. Before long, Mai joins the ranks of the agency, whose associates include a Chinese occultist, a world-famous psychic, a self-proclaimed Shinto shrine maiden, a former Buddhist monk, and a Catholic exorcist. The agency's adventures throughout modern Japan blend elements of Asian folklore and European mythology.

Funimation plans to release the anime on DVD in Fall of 2008. The 25-episode anime series aired in Japan from October of 2006 to March of 2007, and the publisher Del Rey has been releasing the shōjo manga version in North America.
