Tor Books, Seven Seas Join Forces in New Manga Venture

Manga (including Afro Samurai), prose fiction, light novels planned

The Publishers Weekly news magazine is reporting that speculative fiction publisher Tor Books and manga publisher Seven Seas Entertainment will release books in 2008 in a joint manga venture. The new imprint will publish imported Japanese manga, original world manga, prose fiction for young adults, and light novels. One of the imported titles will be Takashi Okazaki's Afro Samurai manga, the inspiration for the action anime series produced by Gonzo and Samuel L. Jackson and released by Spike TV and Funimation. The imprint will begin publishing Afro Samurai in August of 2008 and plan to release six to eight different titles a month in 2008.

Tor Books is itself an imprint of Tom Doherty Associates, which in turn is part of Georg von Holtzbrinck GmbH's Macmillan US group. Macmillan already distributes titles for Drawn & Quarterly, another graphic novel and manga publisher. The new imprint will take over Seven Seas Entertainment's current titles, but Seven Seas founder Jason DeAngelis will remain the owner of Seven Seas and will select new Japanese titles with Steve Kleckner, the Vice President of Merchandise and Sales at Macmillan and former Vice President of Sales and Distribution at Tokyopop.
