Book Looks at Historical, Cultural Angles of Anime

Next month, the academic publishing house M.E. Sharpe will release Japanese Visual Culture, a collection of essays on "historical, cultural, sociological, and religious dimensions of manga and anime." This 384-page book will feature an introduction by manga translator Fred Schodt and 14 individual essays on various issues related to Japanese popular culture. The book will include a chapter written by sociologist Kinko Ito on the place of manga in Japanese history, Gilles Poitras's essay on how Japanese culture views anime, and Israeli scholar Eldad Nakar's look at World War II stories in manga.
Japanese Visual Culture joins several recent books on anime and manga, such as Schodt's The Astro Boy Essays: Osamu Tezuka, Mighty Atom, and the Manga/Anime Revolution, Cinema Anime: Critical Engagements With Japanese Animation (a collection of essays edited by Steven Brown), and Susan Napier's From Impressionism to Anime: Japan as Fantasy and Fan Cult in the Eyes of the West.
