Bandai Visual USA Gets Haruka TV Anime Series (Update 2)

posted on by Egan Loo
1st of 9 volumes for game-based alternate world fantasy to ship on April 22

Bandai Visual USA has posted a preview webpage that pre-announces the company's release of Haruka: Beyond the Stream of Time – A Tale of the Eight Guardians (Harukanaru Toki no Naka de ~Hachiyou Shou~) television series. According to the preview webpage, the full website will go online later on February 15. The first of nine US$29.99 (suggested retail price) volumes for the 2004-2005 26-episode television series will ship on April 22.

The story follows three friends who are transported to an alternate fantasy world with ancient Japanese motifs. One of the friends, Akane, becomes the Priestess of the Dragon God who can help protect the land from demons. Protecting her are eight handsome Guardians, the Hachiyō. The anime series is based on KOEI's Haruka -Beyond the Stream of Time- romance simulation game. It is the second franchise in KOEI's popular Neo Romance line of games for female gamers. (The other Neo Romance franchises are Angelique and La Corda d'Oro.) The Haruka game was also adapted into a manga by its character designer, Tooko Mizuno. Viz Media is serializing the manga in North America in Shojo Beat magazine, with compiled volumes shipping in April.

Update 2: Bandai Visual USA tells ANN that neither "the Haruka OVA series nor the theatrical version is scheduled to release in the US." The 2002-2003 two-volume Harukanaru Toki no Naka de: Ajisai Yumegatari video series and 2003-2005 three-volume Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 2 Shirokiryū no Miko video series predated the television series. A 2006 Harukanaru Toki no Naka de: Maihitoyo movie and 2007 Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 3: Kurenai no Tsuki television special followed after the television series. None of these titles are necessary to follow the story of the television series.
