Pre-War Anime Shorts Screened in New York This Week

Japan Society presents some of Japan's earliest silent animated pieces

The Japan Society will be showing four nights of classic Japanese animated shorts — most pre-dating World War II — in New York during February 13-16. In all, the society will screen 38 pieces from Digital Meme's Japanese Anime Classics Collection DVD box (available via import from Japan) at its New York location. 12 animated pieces will run on February 13 under the theme "Chambara Action & Adventure." Six "Horror & Comedy" works will follow in the next day. February 15 will feature 11 "Propaganda" works, and the program will conclude on February 16 with nine "Music & Dance" pieces. The last night will also include 1925's Orochi live-action martial-arts film, which is one of the oldest surviving silent films in Japanese history. The films with audio soundtracks will have English subtitles, and the silent films will have live benshi narration by professional actors Midori Sawato and Leon Ingulsrud.
