Maiko Haaaan live-action comedy to play in New York, Seattle, Los Angeles

The computer-graphics film Vexille from Ping-Pong director Fumihiko Sori will play at the Independent Film Festival of Boston on April 25 and 28. Funimation's science-fiction film explores Japan after a tech-driven regime imposes a new age of self-isolation. Sori had previously worked on the production of Appleseed and animated the computer-graphics characters in Titanic. The soundtrack features Paul Oakenfold (Appleseed), The Prodigy and other international contributors.

The Maiko Haaaan!!! live-action comedy from Viz Pictures (the film affiliate of Viz Media), is playing from now until April 24 in New York. The film will then move to Seattle, Washington on May 2-8 and Los Angeles on May 23-29. The film revolves around a Japanese salaryman (male corporate worker) named Kumihiko Onizuka (Sadao Abe) who dumps his girlfriend because he believes he can only fall in love with a maiko (apprentice geisha). He decides to pursue his dream of meeting a real maiko …to play rock-paper-scissors. His rival in his quixotic pursuit is an 800-million-yen (about US$8-million) pro baseball player (Shinichi Tsutsumi), while his girlfriend (Kou Shibasaki) tries to win him back by quiting her office-lady job and becoming a maiko herself. Screenwriter Kankurō Kudō is known for his award-winning work on Ping-Pong, the Go live-action film, and the Ikebukuro West Gate Park television series.
