U.S. Navy Distributes Carrier Manga at Base, Online

Manga CVN73 USS George Washington given out before ship's arrival

The United States Navy distributed an estimated 800 free copies of Manga CVN73 USS George Washington, a Japanese-language graphic novel about the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier deployed to Japan, at Yokosuka Naval Base on Sunday afternoon. The Navy is also distributing PDF copies online in English or Japanese on Monday. Harumi Sato and Hiroshi Kazusa wrote and drew the 200-page manga at the behest of the Navy's Japan Public Affairs Office, who wanted a more accessible format than a typical brochure. Through an fictional Japanese-American sailor, the manga describes the ship and its mission before its August arrival at Yokosuka.

Osaka Shoseki, the company that published the 26,000 CVN73 copies for US$90,000, prints primarily textbooks instead of manga. It is one of the companies in the recent controversy over revisions to Japanese history textbooks.
