Bandai's Battle Spirits Card Game to Get Anime, Manga

Sunrise to animate trading card game based on fighting spirits for TV

The Japanese toy and game maker Bandai has announced on Thursday that it will launch the Battle Spirits trading card game on September 13, and tie it with both anime and manga. The company spent three years developing this "new generation of trading card games," which will mark the 20th anniversary of Bandai's Carddas trading card vending machines. The cards will represent dragons, demons, birds, insects and other spirits that the players will control in battles. Bandai says the game will be distinguished by its fast gameplay and immediate turnarounds. American Michael Elliott (Magic, Duel Masters, Xiaolin Showdown card games) has been in charge of development.

Sunrise will produce the anime adaptation (preliminary image above) which will broadcast in the fall. The animators plan to incorporate computer graphics to portray the battles from the card game.

The Battle Spirits manga (preliminary image at left) will launch in Kadokawa Shoten's Kerokero Ace children's manga magazine on July 26. In addition, the magazine will run articles about game strategy, profile the story's characters, and include bonus cards.
