Viz Adds 20th Century Boys, Pluto Manga

posted on 2008-07-26 09:01 AEST
Mystery suspense manga from acclaimed creator of Monster, Yawara!, Master Keaton

The North American anime and manga distributor Viz Media has announced at its Comic-Con International panel today that it licensed the acclaimed 20th Century Boys and Pluto manga from Naoki Urasawa (Monster, Yawara!, Master Keaton). In the story of 20th Century Boys, a man realizes that calamities cropping up around the world have eerie similarities to idle plans he and his childhood friends made decades ago. The manga is the basis for a movie trilogy being shot in Japan.

Pluto is Urasawa's re-envisioning of Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy world. Urasawa's story expands upon one of Tezuka's minor characters, the Europol detective Gesicht, into a mystery manga that deals with crimes in a society of robots and humans. It is rare in Japan for one manga creator to re-interpret another manga creator's work. Both manga titles will launch next February on a bimonthly schedule.
