11 Manga Titles in August's Top 20 U.S. Graphic Novels

posted on by Egan Loo
Watchman, Batman continue to dominate, while Naruto tops manga

The ICv2 retail news source reports on the BookScan Top 20 Graphic Novels for August in the American retail market, and Japanese manga make up 11 of the titles on the chart - but none in the top three. Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto volumes 30 drops from last month's #2 to #4, while two older volumes (volumes 29 and 28 at #11 and #16, respectively) and the next volume (31 at #12) also rank. However, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen classic stays at #1, and no less than five Batman titles are on the chart. (Warner Brothers has adapted or will adapt both franchises from America's DC Comics into films.)

Among Japanese manga titles, Akihisa Ikeda' Rosario + Vampire volume 2 (#6), Natsuki Takaya's Fruits Basket volume 20 (#7), Katsura Hoshino's D.Gray-man volume 10 (#10), Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata's Death Note volume 1 (#14), Natsumi Ando's Kitchen Princess volume 7 (#15), and Clamp's Tsubasa volume 18 (#17) also make the list. Queenie Chan's In Odd We Trust interpretation of Dean R. Koontz's Odd Thomas character lingers on the chart at #20.

Update: Kitchen Princess and August chart link added.
