USA Today Booklist, October 27-November 2: Naruto 32

posted on by Egan Loo
Latest volume debuts at #123 amid reports of decline in all graphic novel sales

The latest volume of Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto (Viz Media) is once again the only manga selling well enough in the United States to make it onto the USA Today newspaper's list of the top 150 bestselling books during the week of October 27-November 2. In its first week of availability, Naruto volume 32 placed in the #123 position. For comparison, the previous volume debuted on the September 1-7 list at #24, the highest rank ever achieved by a manga in its first week. It went on to remain a bestseller for six weeks, until the week of October 6-12. For the next two weeks after that, there were no manga on the USA Today list, and before Volume 31's release, there were no manga bestsellers for a full four weeks from August 3 to September 2.

Naruto's relative success comes amid reports that Borders and Barnes & Noble, two bookshop chains that had been extremely aggressive in expanding their manga offerings, are decreasing their graphic novel orders by as much as 60% for the holiday season.
