Reference Book Publisher to Ship Rough Guide to Anime

British journalist to publish overview of anime medium for newcomers in June

Rough Guides, the London and New York-based publisher known for its travel and reference books on topics as diverse as "chick flicks," Led Zeppelin, and videogames, will be bringing out The Rough Guide to Anime. The 304-page book is intended as a general introduction to Japanese animation, aimed at those who are totally unfamiliar with the medium. The book, which is due out on June 1 and is already listed on online retailers, will contain profiles of the top 50 "must-see" anime and the leading directors and creators, as well as sections on anime's history, some specific themes, Japanese attractions that would be of interest to fans, and an overview of anime conventions.

The book's author, Simon Richmond, is a journalist and travel writer who has worked for BBC, Fodor's, Rough Guides, Lonely Planet, and Time Out. His full-length books include the Rough Guides volumes on Tokyo and Japan. As a newspaper journalist, he has contributed to The Japan Times and Great Britain's Daily Telegraph and Guardian.

Rough Guides also has plans to publish a companion book on manga, but no details on that, beyond an expected street date of September 21, are available yet.
