Vagabond's Takehiko Inoue, artist Toshio Iwai win MEXT's 1st Media Arts prizes

The Agency for Cultural Affairs of the Japanese government announced this year's winners of the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) Art Encouragement Prizes, including the first ever prizes in the Media Arts category, on Friday. This year's winner of the MEXT Art Encouragement Shinjin Prize in the Media Arts category is Takehiko Inoue, the manga creator of Slam Dunk, Vagabond, and REAL.

Inoue won the separate Media Arts Festival Award in the Manga category for Vagabond in 2000. The same manga earned the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2002. In the Japanese government's Media Arts 100 Poll of the public's favorite works of art of all time, Slam Dunk took first place in the manga division. Viz Media publishes the Vagabond, Slam Dunk, and Real manga in North America.

The winner of this year's main MEXT Art Encouragement Prize in the Media Arts category is Toshio Iwai, the creator of the Electroplankton game and Yamaha's Tenori-on digital musical instrument, as well as a contributor to the Bouncing Totoro zoetrope in the Ghibli Museum.
