Virtual Child Porn Ban Bill Goes to UK House of Lords

posted on by Egan Loo

A piece of legislation known as the Coroners and Justice Bill, which would extend "the law proscribing possession of child pornography to include non‑photographic images," has moved to the House of Lords in the British Parliament on Thursday. The bill's definition of "image" specifically includes an "image of an imaginary child." Explicitly sexual depictions of fictional children have been labeled as "virtual child pornography" in policy discussions on this topic in other countries. The House of Commons, the lower of the two houses in the Parliament, already debated this bill earlier this month before sending it to the House of Lords.

Critics of the bill include the Comic Book Alliance which was co-founded by Leah Moore, the daughter of Watchmen graphic novel writer Alan Moore. The critics say that the bill would outlaw such works as Alan Moore's The Lost Girls comic. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice told the inthenews.co.uk website that "it is not our intention to criminalise the legal entertainment industry, the art industry or pornographic cartoons."
