Last Tsuri Baka Nisshi Film, Jin TV Drama in the Works

posted on by Egan Loo

The film distributor Shochiku has announced on Tuesday that this December's 22nd live-action film adaptation of Juzo Yamasaki and Kenichi Kitami's Tsuri Baka Nisshi (Diary of a Fishing Fool) comedy manga will be the last in the venerable movie franchise. Rentarō Mikuni has been playing a salaryman (company employee) who escapes everyday tedium by fishing, while Toshiyuki Nishida plays his boss. The two have starred in these films almost every year since 1988. Each movie has been seen in theaters between 500,000 and 700,000 times, for a franchise total of 20 million times as of the 21st installment last year. The last film will open in Japan on December 26. The original manga has been running in Shogakukan's Big Comic Original magazine since 1979, and there was a 2002-2003 anime series.

This year's ninth issue of Shueisha's Super Jump magazine has announced on Wednesday that Motoka Murakami's Jin manga will be adapted into a live-action television drama series. The title character is a modern-day brain surgeon who leaps back in time to the Bakumatsu era, the period that spelled the end of the shoguns' rule over Japan. Jin ends up using his 21st-century medical expertise to save lives in the 19th century. The manga has been running in the magazine on and off since 2000.
