GeGeGe no Nyōbō Book by GeGeGe Author's Wife Gets Film (Updated)

GeGeGe no Nyōbō (Spooky Wife), the essay book that the wife of GeGeGe no Kitarō horror manga author Shigeru Mizuki wrote about their years together, is being adapted into a film. Nunoe Mura published the book in 2008 to chronicle their relationship, and 40,000 copies have been sold. Mizuki, whose real name is Shigeru Mura, was a veteran who lost his left arm in World War II. Five days after meeting for the first time in an omiai (traditional Japanese ceremony for betrothal) in 1961, 39-year-old Shigeru and 29-year-old Nunoe were married.

Actor and screenwriter Takuji Suzuki is directing the film. Suzuki is still casting the movie, but filming will begin this fall. The producers plan to release the film next summer to celebrate Mizuki's 60th year of drawing art. In the past year, Mizuki's works have inspired two television anime series, an animated film, and a live-action film. Mizuki won the Asahi Prize in January, and his Sōin Gyokusai Se yo (Opération Mort /Operation Death) war manga won the Heritage Award at France's Angoulême International Comics Festival in February. He held an art exhibition in Washington, D.C. last spring and launched a new manga called Tōno Monogatari (Tales of Tōno) in July.

Update: Cinema Topics Online reports that the book is also being adapted into a television drama from March 29 to September 25 of next year.
