Bakemonogatari to premiere on TV in July, Summer Wars film to open in August

The official Japanese website for Aniplex's anime adaptation of NisiOisin's Bakemonogatari light novels has begun streaming a 97-second promotional video on Wednesday. The short stories in NisiOisin's two volumes of Bakemonogatari deal with a high school boy named Koyomi Araragi and strange students he encounters. ("Bakemonogatari" is a wordplay on the Japanese term bakemono for supernatural creatures and the term monogatari for stories.) Akiyuki Shinbo (ef: a tale of melodies., Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, MoonPhase, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, The SoulTaker) is directing off scripts supervised by Fuyashi Tou (Zoku Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei). Akio Watanabe (Nurse Witch Komugi, The SoulTaker) is adapting VOfan's original character designs for the Shaft animators. The series will premiere in Japan on July 3.

The Kadokawa Anime Channel on the YouTube website officially began streaming the 15-second television commercial for Summer Wars, the next anime film from Mamoru Hosoda (Digimon movies, Superflat Monogram) after his award-winning The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Toki o Kakeru Shōjo or TokiKake). The light-hearted "action entertainment" story revolves around a modern-day family on a midsummer adventure. The film's 111-second trailer and the previous one-minute teaser trailer are still available. The project reunites many of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time's staffers, including scriptwriter Satoko Okudera (Angel, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Miyori no Mori) and character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Evangelion, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, FLCL). The film will open in Japan on August 1.
