Ghibli Animates TV Ad for Yomiuri Shimbun Newspaper

Studio Ghibli has produced a Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper commercial that will begin airing in Japan on Saturday. The art of the advertisement is inspired by Shigeru Sugiura (pictured at right), the 20th-century manga artist known for Doron Chibimaru and other classics. (Ghibli thanked Sugiura in the credits of the Pom Poko film for inspiring some of the depictions of the film's tanuki creatures.)
Hayao Miyazaki — a fan of Sugiura's work along with Pom Poko director Isao Takahata — planned the production of the commercial. The actual direction was left in the hands of Miyazaki's own son, Goro (pictured at left). Goro directed 2006's Tales from Earthsea, which was only the third Ghibli theatrical feature film not directed by Miyazaki or Takahata. Ghibli had revealed in 2008 that the younger Miyazaki and Takahata were developing works for release after the older Miyazaki's Gake no Ue no Ponyo (Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea) opened that year.
