Japanese Box Office, August 15-16 (Updated)

Kamen Rider drops to #3; Pokémon, Gokusen stay on chart

Kamen Rider Decade: All Rider Tai Dai-Shocker dropped from #1 to #3 on Kogyo Tsushinsha's Japanese box office chart during the August 15-16 weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, it took in US$2,269,561 on 345 screens during its second weekend for a cumulative box office of US$12,526,469.

Kunihiko Yuyama's Pocket Monster Diamond & Pearl: Arceus Chōkoku no Jikū e, the 12th film in the Pokémon anime franchise, fell from #3 to #5. It earned US$1,732,939 on 366 screens in its fifth weekend to add to its total of US$40,631,237.

Gokusen the Movie, Tōya Satō's live-action theatrical film based on Kozueko Morimoto's Gokusen school comedy manga, rose back up from #8 to #7 in its sixth weekend. It earned US$1,339,496 on 409 screens for a gross-to-date of US$31,728,424. After three television series, Yukie Nakama is reprising her starring role of Kumiko "Yankumi" Yamaguchi, the high school teacher with yakuza ties, one last time for the film.

Naruto Shippūden: Hi no Ishi o Tsugumono, the third Naruto Shippūden anime film based on Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto ninja manga, fell from #9 off the chart in its third weekend. Mamoru Hosoda's Summer Wars film also dropped from #10 off the chart in its third weekend. The new #1 film was Shawn Levy's Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.

Update: Box Office Mojo reports that the final, actual weekend tally for Ponyo was US$1,887,921 to add to its cumulative total of US$11,033,256. It earned an average of US$2,145 per screen.
