Crayon Shin-chan Anime's Continuation, Film Confirmed (Updated)

Production companies preparing next film for Spring 2010

Japan's TV Asahi network has confirmed on Friday that it will continue broadcasting the Crayon Shin-chan anime series after its creator, manga artist Yoshito Usui, passed away last month. TV Asahi will resume airing new episodes about the rambunctious kindergartner Shin-chan in Japan on October 16. TV Asahi has also announced that the companies involved with the anime are preparing for the next film, which will open in Japan in spring of 2010.

Hiroshi Hayakawa, president of the TV Asahi network, had already said at a Tuesday press conference that his company was aiming to continue the anime after discussing the matter with the Shinei Animation production company and Usui's family. Hayakawa cited Doraemon and Sazae-san as examples of anime that have continued after their creators passed away.

The Japanese publisher Futabasha plans to publish the last two installments of the original Crayon Shin-chan manga in Manga Town magazine in October and November. Eiga Crayon Shin-chan: Otakebe! Kasukabe Yasei Ōkoku (Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Roar! Kasukabe Wild Kingdom), the 17th film based on the anime series, opened in April. Takashi Yamazaki's live-action Ballad: Namonaki Koi no Uta period drama film opened at #2 at the box office during the September 5-6 weekend. Tsuyoshi Kusanagi of the SMAP entertainment group stars in this historical romance based loosely on the plot of the award-winning Crayon Shin-chan: Arashi wo Yobu Appare! Sengoku Daikassen film (pictured at left).

CMX Manga has been releasing the original manga in English in North America. Funimation has been adapting the television anime into dubbed English, and America's Adult Swim network used to run episodes every Sunday morning.
