Japanese Box Office, September 19-20

Duel Masters: Lunatic God Saga and Penguin no Mondai - Shiawase no Aoi Tori de Gopennasai opened at #1 on Kogyo Tsushinsha's Japanese box office chart during the September 19-20 weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, it earned the equivalent of US$2,112,208 on 308 screens. TOHO's double feature is based on Shogakukan's Duel Masters and A Penguin's Troubles (Penguin no Mondai) television anime series.
Kogyo Tsushinsha listed the third film in Yukihiko Tsutsumi's three-part live-action adaptation of Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys manga as the #2 film of the weekend, but Box Office Mojo pegged it as #1 with US$2,536,224 on 374 screens. After its fourth weekend, it has a gross-to-date of US$34,891,716.
Yōichi Sai's (Choi Yang-il's) live-action film adaptation of Sanpei Shirato's Kamui Gaiden ninja manga opened at #3. Ken'ichi Matsuyama (Death Note movies' L, Detroit Metal City's Sōichi/Krauser II) stars in the title role of a rogue ninja on the run from his own clan. The film garnered US$1,748,852 on 309 screens.
Takashi Yamazaki's live-action Ballad: Namonaki Koi no Uta period drama film slipped from #3 to #4 in its third weekend. It added US$1,394,481 on 331 screens for a total of US$9,962,814. Tsuyoshi Kusanagi of the SMAP entertainment group stars in this historical romance based loosely on the plot of the award-winning Crayon Shin-chan: Arashi wo Yobu Appare! Sengoku Daikassen film.
Mamoru Hosoda's Summer Wars film fell from #10 off the chart in its eighth weekend.
