2009 Space Battleship Yamato Film Has 2 Endings Made

Preview screening audience to vote on which ending will be in theatrical print

The animators of this year's Uchuu Senkan Yamato Fukkatsu-hen (Space Battleship Yamato: Rebirth Chapter) film created two different endings, and 4,000 viewers at a preview screening will vote on which ending will be used in the final theatrical print.

The anime film, which is the first film from the Yamato space opera franchise in 26 years, will open throughout Japan on December 12, but it will first be previewed at the Tokyo International Forum center on November 28. The 4,000 audience members at the preview screening will see one version that clocks in at two hours and 13 minutes long. They will then see another ending that runs for about 15 more minutes. According to a member of the production team, the difference between the two versions is that one has the title spaceship Yamato defying fate, while the other has Yamato accepting fate.

The preview audience members will vote by mobile phone on which ending they prefer. The results of the poll will not be revealed until the chosen ending appears in theaters on December 12.

The original 1974 anime recounted the voyages of the World War II battleship Yamato after it is resurrected as a space-faring ship to fend off alien threats to Earth. The new film sequel follows the original hero Susumu Kodai, his wife (and original Yamato heroine) Yuki, and their daughter Miyuki. The family leads a fleet from Earth after the planet is threatened by a black hole. Producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki is overseeing the new anime film, but not co-creator Leiji Matsumoto.

A separate live-action film remake by director Takashi Yamazaki (Returner, Always: Sunset on Third Street, Ballad) will feature SMAP band member Takuya Kimura (Howl's Moving Castle's Howl) and Meisa Kuroki (Vexille - 2077 Isolation of Japan's Vexille, Crows Zero's Luca) as the main characters Susumu and Yuki, respectively.
