posted on by Egan Loo
U.S.-Japan film by Cybergraphix Animation, APPP; manga also planned

The North American anime distributor Funimation has announced on Monday that it has licensed the animated Guardians of Luna film from Cybergraphix Animation. According to Funimation, "Guardians of Luna is a dark story which centers around an ancient race of shape-shifters with the ability to change into powerful creatures. Four unlikely heroes descended from this once-great race are charged with protecting an ancestral power source from a ruthless mogul."

Michael Reaves (Batman: The Animated Series, Gargoyles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mighty Orbots) is supervising the scripts, and Cindy H. Yamauchi (Sōten Kōro; animation director on Black Lagoon, Gungrave) is designing the characters for the APPP anime studio (Robot Carnival, Shin Kyūseishu Densetsu Hokuto no Ken: Toki-den). Production on the film is expected to begin in 2010, and a manga is also planned. The project's website is at www.guardiansofluna.com.

Cybergraphix Animation first revealed the project as a planned 26-episode series with a slightly different staff lineup in 2005.

Update: More background information added.

Update 2: Funimation tells ANN that the Guardians of Luna project is separate from its new co-production initiative that is headed by Director of Original Entertainment Chris Moujaes.
