Junod Anime Film on Hiroshima Aftermath Slated for 2010 (Updated)

Junod, a film that recounts the life of the first foreign doctor to arrive at Hiroshima after its atomic bombing, is expected to be completed at the end of January. Marcel Junod was a Swiss doctor who served in the Red Cross throughout the entire course of World War II, but he is best known in Japan for organizing the delivery of 15 tons of medical supplies to Hiroshima after the bombing.
In the 60-minute film, two middle school girls, Mii (Aki Toyosaki) and Yuko (Ayahi Takagaki) are visiting Hiroshima when they are transported back in time to World War II. The schoolgirls not only see efforts of Junod (Hiroshi Yanaka) in Hiroshima firsthand, but also his efforts to improve the conditions of prisoners of war. Shinji Ogawa plays Douglas MacArthur, the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers during Japan's post-war occupation.
A six-minute trailer is available in two sizes on the film's official Japanese website. A separate English website has also been posted. A digest version of the film will be screened in Hiroshima on December 23.
Shinichiro Kimura (Karin, Maburaho, Sugar: A Little Snow Fairy) is directing the animators at Studio Hibari on this project. Yasunori Yamada (Karin, Sugar: A Little Snow Fairy) wrote the script and Tomoko Iwasa (Kasimasi - Girl Meets Girl) designed the characters. The non-profit organization MOCT began planning this film three years ago. MOCT has provided medical assistance to the Iranian victims of poison gassing during the Iran-Iraq War and other groups.
