Eva 2.0, Summer Wars Win Japan Academy Awards

The Nippon Academy-Sho Association, a Japanese group roughly comparable to America's Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Oscars fame, has announced the winners of the Awards of Excellence in the 33rd Japan Academy Prizes in Tokyo on Tuesday. The awards honor excellence in motion pictures that premiered in 2009, and will be presented in a ceremony on March 5.
Hideaki Anno and Khara's Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance (Evangelion Shin Gekijōban: Ha), Mamoru Hosoda and Madhouse's Summer Wars, Kôzô Kusuba and Shinei Animation's Doraemon: Shin Nobita no Uchū Kaitakushi, Shinsuke Satō and Production I.G's Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror, and Yasuichiro Yamamoto and TMS Entertainment's Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser will all receive Awards of Excellence in the Animation category. These five films will next compete to be the sole winner of the Animation of the Year award.
The Animation of the Year category was created only three years ago; The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Tekkonkinkreet, and Ponyo were the previous winners. Before that, Studio Ghibli won the overall Picture of the Year Award for Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away.
Masaki Okada, Hiro Mizushima, and Airi Taira earn Awards of Excellence in the New Actor/Actress category for Boku no Hatsukoi o Kimi ni Sasagu, Drop, and the last two 20th Century Boys films, respectively. Toshiyuki Nishida and Rentarō Mikuni will receive special Chairperson's Service Awards for their venerable 21-year-old movie franchise based on Juzo Yamasaki and Kenichi Kitami's Tsuri Baka Nisshi (Diary of a Fishing Fool) comedy manga. The two actors will star in the franchise's 22nd and final film, which opens on Saturday.
