Funimation Adds Gainax, I.G's FLCL Anime on Blu-ray/DVD (Updated)

Action comedy video series from Evangelion co-director, character designer

The North American anime distributor Funimation has announced on Wednesday that it is releasing Gainax and Production I.G's FLCL action comedy anime series. Kazuya Tsurumaki (Evangelion: 1.0 You Are [Not] Alone, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can [Not] Advance) created and directed this six-volume video series with character designs by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Evangelion, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars). The entire series will ship in one DVD set and, for the first time in North America, on Blu-ray Disc in late 2010.

FLCL follows an ordinary Japanese sixth-grader named Naota as he struggles with adolescent issues like his big brother leaving home and his brother's girlfriend Mamimi making advances on him. His life gets turned upside down when a hyperkinetic woman named Haruko runs him down with her Vespa scooter — and then settles into Naota's home. Life only gets more surreal as robots and aliens run amuck in Naota's formerly tranquil town.

The anime was previously released by the Synch-Point anime label of Anime Gamers! (later Broccoli) in North America. However, the anime has been long out-of-print in North America, even before Broccoli closed its Broccoli International USA subsidiary at the end of 2008.

Update: More background information added.

Update 2: Funimation has confirmed that its release will include Synch-Point's English dub. Thanks, kyokun703.
