Retailer to Stop Imports of Funimation BD/DVDs into Japan

posted on by Egan Loo
Japanese firm removes items from site, will only ship existing orders to U.S.

The Japanese online retailer DVD Fantasium has announced on Saturday that it will no longer import products made by the American distributor Funimation into Japan. DVD Fantasium notes that Funimation releases anime on DVD and Blu-ray Disc for the American market, and says that these releases cannot be sold at retail overseas due to licensing agreements. To honor these licensing agreements, DVD Fantasium has removed all of these products from its website. For people who already ordered these products, DVD Fantasium will only ship existing orders to customers at American addresses.

Regular DVD players in Japan cannot play video DVDs that have been region-coded for North America, but multi-region DVD players and workarounds for certain player models exist. Regular Blu-ray Disc players in Japan can play video Blu-ray Discs from North America without modifications. DVD Fantasium's primary business is selling American DVDs, European DVDs, and movie tie-in books in Japan.
