Miyazaki's Nausicaä Gets Japanese Blu-Ray This Summer

posted on by Egan Loo

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment (WDSHE) has confirmed that it will release Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind on Blu-ray Disc in Japan this summer. The announcement came at the end of the Friday night airing of the movie in Japan, but no further details were given. So far, the only Studio Ghibli feature film to receive a Blu-Ray Disc release is Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea. However, WDSHE confirmed its plans to "convert [Studio Ghibli's] older works to Blu-ray in 2010" during the ceremony for the 2nd annual Digital Entertainment Group Japan Awards/Blu-ray Prizes on Thursday.

In a separate development, the Nausicaa.net website posted a paraphrased translation of Miyazaki's surprise appearance on Thursday on Ghibli's production video blog for its next film, Karigurashi no Arrietty. As of Sunday, all but one of the film's 995 cuts has been laid out, and 33% of the animation in those cuts have been completed. The film will open in Japan on July 17.
