Yoshitaka Amano's Exhibit Reopens in San Francisco

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins

The Superfrog Gallery inside "New People," an cultural entertainment center in San Francisco's Japantown neighborhood, is hosting the return of Yoshitaka Amano's Deva Loka USA exhibition from April 24 through May 8. Amano designed or illustrated the Final Fantasy role-playing game series, the Vampire Hunter D novels and anime video, the experimental film Angel's Egg, the seminal superhero team anime Gatchaman, and many other classics.

The art in the exhibition highlights American comics, culture, automobiles, and other influences that inspired Amano as a child. Earlier "Deva Loka" exhibitions had opened in Berlin in 2008, at New People's own opening-week festivities in August 2009, and in Los Angeles in February.

In March, Amano announced that he is directing his first anime film called Zan for worldwide release next year. To that end, he established his own production studio, Studio Deva Loka. Amano coined the name "Deva Loka" from a phrase that means "the place where gods assemble."
