Young Magazine Posted for Free to Mark Anniversary

posted on by Egan Loo
30th year in print marked with free 1st issue; 4 other issues to be posted

Kodansha is marking the 30th anniversary of its seinen manga publication Young Magazine by posting five issues, including the inaugural issue, online for free from June 7 to August 31.

Young Magazine's first issue, which shipped on June 16, 1980, is already online, although the online issues require Crochet, a free browser plug-in for electronic publications. The issue contains manga from such veteran creators as Kenshi Hirokane, Osamu Tezuka, Gō Nagai, Tetsuya Chiba, and Kimio Yanagisawa.

Kodansha website will post the magazine's 100th issue (from September 18, 1984) on June 14. The magazine's first weekly issue (from April 3, 1989) will go online on June 21, followed by the 700th issue (from February 19, 1996) on June 28. Instead of posting an issue on July 5, the website will begin hosting a selection of "legendary" winners of the Tetsuya Chiba prize, the award named after the Ashita no Joe boxing manga creator. The final posted issue will be the inaugural issue of the Monthly Young Magazine spinoff from December 9, 2009.

Titles that have run in Young Magazine over the years have included Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Initial D, xxxHOLiC, Chobits, 3x3 Eyes, Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji, Kiss×sis, and Minami-ke.
