Summer Wars Gets Oscar-Qualifying Run in California

Mamoru Hosoda, Madhouse's film to run for 1 week in Covina in December

The Eiga.com website reports that the American distributor GKIDS will screen Mamoru Hosoda and Madhouse's Summer Wars anime film in the Los Angeles suburb of Covina for one week starting on December 10. The AMC Covina 30 theater will show the film; in order to qualify for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, films must run commercially for at least seven consecutive days in a Los Angeles County theater.

GKIDS will then plan to screen the film in theatrical runs in New York and again in Los Angeles. Funimation already announced that it will release the film on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in 2011. Funimation had noted that GKIDS "guided The Secret of Kells to its Academy Award nomination last year."

Summer Wars already ran in California during last month's Anaheim International Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for Best Animation Feature. The film's English-language dub will premiere in New York City on November 20.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the nominations for the next Academy Awards on January 25, 2011, and it will hold the actual awards ceremony at Hollywood's Kodak Theater on February 27. According to the Oscar rules, if there are 16 eligible films for the Best Animated Feature, there will be a total of five nominees; if there are fewer than 16, the pool of nominees will be only three.
